Royal Life Saving Australia

Blended training success

Royal Life Saving Australia (RLSA) wanted to offer a more engaging, memorable method of delivering its Pool Lifeguard Certificate qualification, traditionally provided through manuals and face-to-face sessions. An eLearning solution was sought to enhance the course through a blended delivery method, and devote face-to-face training to the role’s practical elements: aquatic rescue and CPR.

The interactive nature of online learning would engage a young user base, and secure a competitive advantage for RLSA. A 7-module learning suite was then developed by RLSA and HowToo Xpert, using a gamification framework and rich media elements.

Given the rapid decision-making nature of lifeguarding, many activities include time-sensitive learning according to a situation-decision-consequence model. Multi-browser and multi-platform compatibility, responsive design and accessibility were considered to ensure the flexibility of the modules’ design, and ensure their scalability over time.

The suite’s uptake rates have been particularly strong, and feedback from both instructors and learners has indicated their satisfaction with the program. Participants enrolled in the blended delivery model have a 100% pass rate, unlike those undertaking the traditional workbook approach. The blended model is currently offered in WA and ACT, and other states are likely to follow in coming years.

Royal Life Saving and HowToo Xpert (Formerly Savv-e) Savv-e received the 2019 Gold LearnX Award for Best Learning Model - Blended.
