Case study:

Sydney Water

Game-based learning

Sydney Water sought out digital learning to improve their internal record keeping practices, ensuring organisational compliance with the State Records Act and the protection of important information.

In doing so, the learning would build Sydney Water’s high-performing workplace culture and improve employees’ decision making abilities.

HowToo Xpert’s partnership with Sydney Water ultimately needed to create behavioural change, and make the typically dull topic of workplace record keeping fun and interesting.

A visually-rich, 15-minute module was created by Sydney Water and HowToo Xpert to drive engagement and reward participants as they learn. The module takes the form of a scenario-based game, in which learners embark on a secret mission to construct a pipeline to a Sydney suburb in time for a street festival. Learners earn pieces of the pipeline by completing challenges related to record keeping, providing a sense of accomplishment that adds to the memorability of the content.

In addition to fulfilling a compliance requirement, the module encouraged staff collaboration to follow correct record keeping practices. Ultimately, Sydney Water observed an organisation-wide behavioural change brought on by the learning solution. The objective of the game itself – to build a pipeline – reinforced and aligned with Sydney Water’s corporate purpose of delivering essential water across the city.

Sydney Water and HowToo Xpert (formerly Savv-e) were finalists in the AITD Excellence Awards for the Best Use of Gamification/Simulation in Learning category.
